Congregation Dor Tamid Social Action Committee - Mission Statement
A basic principle of Judaism is "Tikkun Olam" - Repairing the world through mitzvot and tzedakah. CDT's Social Action Committee seeks to involve the congregation in working on projects that will inform and educate our congregants about important issues which impact us as Jews and as citizens of the world, as well as help improve the quality of life of people in need. CDT also strives to advocate for issues concerning Social Justice in accordance with the platforms supported by the URJ (Union for Reform Judaism).
CDT is proud to announce that we have signed a BRIT OLAM covenant with the URJ in association with the Religious Action Center, committing to the concept of Tikkun Olam!
In Pirkei Avot it states:Rabbi Tarfon taught: "It is not your responsibility to finish the work [of perfecting the world], but you are not free to desist from it either" (2:16)
SOCIAL ACTION PROJECTS
Hunger Walk 2018
SUNDAY - February 25, 2018 from Noon to 4PM
This year Hunger Walk is at the Georgia World Congress Center!!!
CDT had a great team of walkers for the annual Hunger Walk in past years! We've raised money and walked for the Atlanta Community Food Bank and the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta! This year, Debbie Eskenazi is our Team Captain! Hopefully we will match or exceed our goals this year so that we can actively show our support for eradicating food insecurity in the Metro-Atlanta area. GO CDT WALKERS!!
CDT congregants are the founding members of the
HOMES AGAINST HUNGER PROJECT
HOMES AGAINST HUNGER is a simple way to help eradicate food insecurity in the Greater Atlanta Area. 3 simple steps:
1- We handout or deliver (to your door) a Teal HOMES AGAINST HUNGER bag.
2- You fill up the bag with non-perishable, non-breakable grocery items (BOGOs work great!!).
3- At appointed dates (4 times a year) we pick up the bag and leave a fresh bag for you.
SIMPLE AS 1-2-3!!!
You may sign up by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
NEXT PICK UP DATE IS: SUNDAY - JANUARY 14th, 2018
Gift of Life Bone Marrow Registry
This past Yom Kippur, CDT conducted our first Gift of Life "Swabbing" for the Bone Marrow Registry to help "save a life"! We are in hopes of continuing this activity for years to come!
For more information on this most worth cause your can go to: https://www.giftoflife.org/
Teenage Domestic Sex Trafficking is rampant in the Greater Atlanta Metro Area and in particular in the NE Suburbs. CDT had a wonderfully, educational program on this crucial issue in the past and we hope that we can have an educational program in the Spring of 2018, working in conjunction with Street Grace (http://www.streetgrace.org).
Atlanta Community Food Bank - Food Drive (ongoing):
All year round, there are Food Donation Bins in the lobby of CDT. Cans and other non-perishable items are being collected for distribution by the ACFB. They serve the greater Atlanta area and supply food for Fulton, Gwinnett, Dekalb, Cobb, Forsyth, Hall and other neighboring counties.
On the High Holy Days - Sisterhood will be overseeing the donation of food for PROJECT ISAIAH! Collection bags will be distributed starting in early September. Start your gathering now. BOGOs are great opportunities to start your donations!
On the 18th of each month from October through April, and assorted other dates, our congregation volunteers to provide and serve dinner to homeless couples at the Zaban Shelter located at The Temple on Peachtree St.. Four to six volunteers are needed each month to feed approximately 50-60 people from 6 - 8pm. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old. If you would like to sign up for a date or get more information, email email@example.com
Annual Coat Drive
During High Holidays, the Social Action Committee has an Annual Coat Drive to benefit North Fulton Community Charities.
Our community garden, Gan Tamid, is on the CDT property. We have several work days each year and are always in need of regular volunteers to help with plantings and care of the garden. Under the direction, and due to the hard work and dedication, of Lesley Radov, last year over 277 lbs. of fresh produce was donated local food banks/coops. This is a great volunteer opportunity for families or individuals who want to make a difference in a “green” way!!
Chesed Tamid - Gift Cards
CDT collects donations and collects and distributes gift cards several times a year to those who could benefit from the use of the same within the CDT community. Donations can be made on the CDT website or in the office.
In support of the Union of Reform Judaism's Religious Action Center's platform and in association with Sojourn Atlanta, http://www.sojourngsd.org, CDT Congregants and Clergy marched with Sojourn and other Atlanta Community synagogues and religious organization in the 201 Pride Parade in October to show our support of equal rights for all people regardless of their gender preferences and/or orientation. This year's parade was on Sunday, October 15, 2017.
Disaster Relief - Supplies for Hurricane Harvey Victims
When Hurricane Harvey hit the Houston Area, our members stepped up and collected supplies to be delivered by Jekyll Brewing Company in Alpharetta down to the people of Houston, TX.
